capitalism

n : an economic system based on private ownership of capital

Our society is a capitistic society. What does this mean to us?

Basically our capitalist economic system has created a society based on consumerism.

comsumerism

n: The theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial.

In order to achieve this "progressively greater consumption of goods", we are constantly bombarded with advertising.

advertising

n: The activity of attracting public attention to a product or business, as by paid announcements in the print, broadcast, or electronic media.

I've come to the conclusion advertising is basically lying. Every single advertisment that includes an actor or actress playing a role and giving a testimony about the product or service is a priori (Proceeding from a known or assumed cause to a necessarily related effect; deductive.) lying. If no such person exists, how can they truthfully testify to the quality of a product or service?

Lets look thru one of my cupboards: "New" All fabric refresher, "citrus breeze"; "improved" Purex bleach "Mountain Breeze"; "New" Lysol Disinfectant, "eliminates odors""soft powder scent" (Isn't an odor and a scent the same thing? how can you elimnate one but still have the other?); "New" Spic and Span, "Fresh Citrus scent".

Amazingly all these established products are all "New". Those companies must be spending a lot of money to constantly have "New" formulas! There's nothing quite like a "Mountain Breeze" scent, In fact what DOES a mountain breeze smell like? Whats a "soft powder scent"? It sounds like something that gets up my nose when I breathe and makes me sneeze!

Is all this truthfull or is it lies?

If my daily newspaper consists of 40 pages, how much is advertising and how much news? How much of the "news" is actually press releases made to sound like factual stories?

Why am I paying for advertising propaganda? Why aren't they paying me to be subjected to more untruths and outright lies?

We have lies thrown at us all day, billboards, radio, TV, newspaper, the internet, email, often at work thru management announcements. Is it any wonder that politicians don't mind lying to our faces with no regard for the truth? Face it, we are so used to "advertising" or Lies, we don't even consciously think about it anymore. This crap just sinks into our subconscious and we accept it as "knowledge". How many times have you said something like "I heard that product works well", or "That truck is really tough, goes anywhere"? Think carefully, Who told you that? Did you hear it from a commercial on TV? If a friend said it, where did they hear it? Was it a personal observation or did it just creep into his subconscious from advertising? I've caught myself doing that and realized the opinion came from advertising.

I hope this doesn't sound bitter, but I'm sick and tired of all these lies. Maybe we should outlaw all the false claims or make them put a disclaimer on all ads, "This is not neccessarily true as stated, and you may not need this, we just want your money!"

More real soon on Political crap!
